USDC Overview
USD Coin (USDC) is a stablecoin created by CENTRE, an open source project bootstrapped by contributions from Circle and Coinbase. It is pegged to U.S dollars (USD), so 1 USDC = 1 USD. It is an ethereum token, making it compatible with any Ethereum-based wallets. It is open-source and works as a fiat to the blockchain ecosystem. The governance is taken care by CENTRE and is dedicated to connect it with person, merchants, financial institutions and currency globally. The USDC ecosystem comprises of wallets, exchanges, platforms, app and service providers.
The stablecoin seems to be issued by regulated and licensed financial institutions. Issuers are required to regularly report their USD reserve holdings, and Grant Thornton LLP issues reports on those holdings every month as per their website. The collaboration is encouraged with Circle, Coinbase and other CENTRE members. The service providers are reserve bank partners and compliance organizations which ensure USDC checks and balances as per the information on their website. We could not authenticate the same.
A separate entity registration could not be found for CENTRE which is a matter of concern. There are high possibilities that funds could be manipulated due to operations and interference of centre.
